Take the Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen for panoramic views of Bergen and its surrounding fjords. Visit Bergen’s best museums and take a traditional dip in the seawater of Nordnes Sjøbad, featuring a thermal pool, a few saunas, and a cordoned-off area of seawater. Be sure to try this unique wellness experience just a short walk from Bergen’s city center.

4. Lofoten Islands: Arctic Beauty and Coastal Adventures

For a truly unique winter getaway, head to the Lofoten Islands, an archipelago known for its dramatic landscapes, towering peaks, and picturesque fishing villages. Embark on a Wildlife Safari to spot sea eagles and seals against the backdrop of snowy mountains. The charming fishing villages, such as Reine and Henningsvær, provide an authentic glimpse into local life. Don't miss the chance to savor freshly caught seafood at one of the local restaurants, showcasing the flavors of the Arctic Ocean.

Begin your journey to the Lofoten Islands by flying into Harstad/Narvik Airport (Evenes) or Bodø Airport, then catch a ferry or take a scenic drive to the islands. Once on the archipelago, car rentals or local buses provide the flexibility to explore the charming fishing villages and rugged landscapes at your own pace.

Tip!

  • Keep in mind the restricted daylight hours while scheduling your activities, in Tromsø, the Polar Night - when the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon - lasts from the end of November to mid-January, while in Lofoten this period is slightly shorter.

  • If you plan to make a road trip, ensure you have a car equipped with winter tires, especially if your journey includes mountainous routes.

What to Pack?

As you embark on your Norwegian winter adventure, packing essentials ensures you're ready for the diverse experiences that await. Start with warm, waterproof layers, including insulated jackets, thermal clothing, wool socks, and sturdy waterproof boots, especially if you plan to engage in outdoor activities like hiking. On guided winter adventures, you might get offered thermal packs to keep you warm!

Don't forget sunglasses, gloves, a hat, and a scarf to shield against the chilly air. For your urban explorations, pack comfortable walking shoes for cobbled streets and stylish layers for city outings.

A camera is a must to capture the mesmerizing landscapes, vibrant cityscapes, and the elusive Northern Lights. Be sure to bring extra batteries or a power bank, batteries drain fast in the cold! Lastly, embrace the cozy atmosphere with a good book to read in your lodge or hotel whilst keeping warm at the fire.

With these essentials in tow, you'll be well-prepared to embrace the magic of a Norwegian winter.
